New Director for Gloucestershire Youth Support Team

“I feel passionately that every child and young person deserves the opportunity to thrive” says Kat Aukett, new director for Gloucestershire Youth Support Team

Gloucestershire Youth Support Team has appointed Kat Aukett, as their new Operations Director. The role, running the county’s youth services for Prospects on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council, was previously held by Alison Williams, Director of Children and Family Services at Shaw Trust, following her one year secondment to Gloucestershire County Council as Director of Children’s Services.

The multi-disciplinary Youth Support Team works with approximately 6,000 vulnerable young people in the county, targeting specific groups who are most at risk of not moving successfully into adulthood. This includes young offenders and those on the edge of the criminal justice system, looked after children and care leavers over the age of 16, unemployed young people, homeless young people, teenage parents, young people who run away from home or care, young people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and young people with substance misuse issues or other health needs.

Kat joins the team having been the Director of Services and Innovation for Family Action, where she managed 140 Family Action projects across the UK. She is a qualified social worker and started her career in residential children’s homes and secure children’s homes before moving into youth offending work in Nottingham and with Crime Concern Trust. More recently Kat has been instrumental in developing children and families services supporting substantial business growth.

Kat has always been passionate about supporting vulnerable people in our society and particularly young people. As a social work practitioner and a senior manager in a variety of settings she brings her experience to the great work taking place across Gloucestershire, her home county having moved to Cheltenham 11 years ago.

Kat comments: “I started my working life in residential child care, and remained committed to providing support to and working with children and young people to assist them to reach their potential. I have worked in the youth justice sector, in the secure estate and youth offending services as well as within fostering and children and families services. I feel passionately that every child and young person deserves the opportunity to thrive and that we need to be proactive in supporting those that are vulnerable or experiencing difficulties.

“It is an interesting time for the care sector with both challenges and opportunities and I look forward to contributing to the organisational development. I am acutely aware that the most powerful and sustainable impact is achieved through team work and hope that working with the senior team within Gloucestershire, we can continue to develop an excellent and effective service for the benefit of young people using our experience and passion.”

Alison Williams comments: “I am delighted Kat is our new Operations Director for the Youth Support Team, I am confident that Kat’s experience will help us extend our current footprint within children’s services and support the quality improvement work that is required in Gloucestershire.”
