Shaw Trust celebrates Employability Day

19 June 2019

Acton Hub Employability

Colleagues around the group celebrated Employability Day on Friday (28 June). Events were held at our hubs in London, Birmingham and Leicester.

Leicester Hub on Employability DayEmployability Day is the UK’s largest celebration for organisations supporting people to gain, sustain and progress in work. Coordinated by the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA), hundreds of businesses, charities and other bodies opened their doors to raise awareness about how they support local people.

This year’s Employability Day theme is ‘closing the gaps’. Despite record employment, there are still significant disparities between groups in terms of employment rate, pay and career progression. For example, the employment gap between disabled people and non-disabled people is 30% in the UK. Shaw Trust is helping to close the gaps through programmes such as the Work and Health Programme which provides specialist support for individuals who have health conditions or disabilities, have been unemployed for more than two years and would benefit from early help to find employment because they may be at a disadvantage in the labour market.

Dr Julie Nugent Director of productivity and skills at the West Midlands Combined AuthorityIn Birmingham as well as holding a celebratory event, they also hosted webinars in partnership with the Institute of Employability Professionals (IEP), Scope and Virgin to about the #WorkWithMe pledge. The #WorkWithMe pledge calls for businesses to come together to create more inclusive workplaces for disabled people, demonstrating a commitment to thinking and acting differently about disability in their organisation. All IEP members were invited to take part in the webinar.

Karen Mitchell, Regional Operations Manager, at Shaw Trust, said:

“Closing the gap to help more people get in to and progress in work is what we do every day. UK Employability Day is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise those working tirelessly to support local people into employment. Today we have also heard from those who have found work, started their own business or progressed in their career. Their determination and hard work is being celebrated and we look forward to hearing more about their successes in future.”
