A trip to Skills South West opens doors for Liam
In 2015, Liam was told he would be attending Skills South West with his classmates as part of an arranged school trip. He wasn’t entirely sure what the event would be like, but having a brief idea that he wanted to undertake an apprenticeship of some kind, he went along with an open mind.
What Prospects did
At Skills South West, Liam discovered various exhibitors offering information on apprenticeships and got involved in the many hands-on activities that were on offer to visitors. Amongst these exhibitors were Barratt Developments.
Liam had a long chat with one of their current apprentices, who gave him a wealth of information about this unique type of qualification, what it involved, the hours, expectations and study. This really peaked Liam’s interest and he then spoke to Phil Webb, Senior Site Manager and Apprentice Mentor for Barratt Developments, who was also on the stand that day.
Phil explained the many benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship with Barratt Developments and drew out of Liam what type of area he would like to work in. Having always been more of a practical learner, Liam and Phil discussed Carpentry and Liam was amazed he could do all this in the local area.
Liam was so impressed with the information and guidance given to him, he expressed his interest on site. Liam then went through an in depth selection process culminating in his acceptance onto his Level 2 Apprenticeship in Carpentry which he now studies at Plymouth City College.
Phil Webb commented, “Over the past seven months, Liam has proved his commitment and interest in the qualification and is doing extremely well at college and on site; just some of the reasons why he decided to attend Skills South West 2016 with Barratt Developments. Knowing what a great opportunity he gained just by attending the event, Liam wanted to provide the same insight and information to future apprentices visiting Skills South West this year and to inspire them to follow in his footsteps.”
