From Prison to PhD for Adrian

National Careers ServiceBefore Prospects

Prospects are the prime contractor for the National Careers In Custody Service in the West Midlands and first met Adrian* when he was in custody.

What Prospects did

Adrian initially spoke to the National Careers Service in March 2013 when he was referred by the prison.

Adrian needed help applying for university and securing funding for a masters degree when he met with adviser, Ruth. Together they helped Adrian prepare his university application, research funding opportunities and complete funding applications.

Working together Ruth enabled Adrian to see himself as he aspired to be, a student, not just a prisoner and spent time helping Adrian to focus on his plans.

Outcomes and results

Adrian is now in full time education, studying for an MSc at Aston University and plan to do a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry with a view to becoming a junior pharmaceutical chemist and research scientist.

Adrian believes the help he received enabled him to gain his university place and improve his job prospects.

He has gained laboratory experience as a Research Assistant (Internship) and is now father to two children; his thirteen year old stepdaughter and five month old son with his partner.

Adrian has recommended the National Careers Service to his peers. From his own good experience he feels others should "Go for it. They will be able to help you and focus your plans."
