Quality Award in CEIAG - Halesowen College

22 July 2013

Halesowen College is situated to the south of Dudley in the West Midlands. A very large proportion of learners make progress to higher level courses at college, higher education or into employment. “Careers” in Halesowen College is delivered by a highly qualified team with a vast range of experience who work from a dedicated “state of the art” Careers and H.E. Centre. They have held a Quality Award for some years. Their submission in 2009 was deemed to be of such a high quality that they were invited to apply for the prestigious Gold Award – which they subsequently achieved in 2010.

In May 2013, Halesowen College was re-accredited with Award – and once again, their submission was deemed to be of exceptional quality. The Accreditation Board had no hesitation in making the Award at the highest level, noting that there were examples of outstanding practice.

Testimony from students seen during the Assessment Visit confirmed the high value they put on the work of the qualified and enthusiastic careers team – seen widely to be an integral part of college life and the curriculum. Careers Team members said that they found the self-assessment process very clear and straightforward to follow and also that they appreciated the option to submit their portfolio electronically. They enthused about the reaction from the rest of the college to the news of the Award – they have been feted during staff meetings and were also asked about it during a recent OfSTED inspection.

The Ofsted report, published in July 2013 echoes the Quality Award Accreditation Board’s view that this is an excellent college for careers work by praising the “highly effective information, advice and career guidance (that) helps learners to make informed choices and ensures that they are prepared well for their courses. Careers guidance is very informative and readily available to all learners. Learners are well informed about the choices available to them to progress to further learning or employment. “
