Parental Engagement

Parental engagement can improve outcomes

“Parental engagement has a large and positive impact on children’s learning… It is therefore a priority for schools to identify interventions that are effective in supporting parental engagement, particularly for those parents who are not significantly involved in their children’s education.” Goodall and Vorhaus, Best Practice in Parental Engagement, DfE, 2011.

The benefits of schools engaging effectively with parents include:

  • Improved pupil attendance, punctuality, behaviour and progress
  • Increased parental participation and involvement
  • Enhanced parental support for children’s learning
  • Improved home-school communications and relationships

Prospects’ Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) is a nationally-recognised programme through which schools and academies can develop and strengthen their delivery of effective parental engagement from early years to post-16.

Through LPPA, schools invest in:

  • A clear framework for action, relevant to any school, which helps to identify strengths as well as areas for development
  • An integrated holistic approach to parental engagement
  • Professional advice and support from experienced senior educationalists, enabling the academy to benchmark itself against national practice
  • Staff development, enabling key staff and the academy to evaluate and monitor areas of their responsibility, in relation to parental engagement
  • Significant impact on areas, including improving two-way communication, positive learning climate, improved attendance, punctuality, behaviour and progress
  • Engaging with parents/carers who might traditionally find working with the school difficult

What people say

"The LPPA process has helped us focus on identifying the fundamental areas of staff and teacher relationships that need a change at a whole school level. This focus has then let us plan, both strategically and practically, to improve how the school meets parents’ needs so they in turn help their children’s learning. This, linked with our new mentoring systems, has led to a significant rise in standards across the school over the period.”
Headteacher, East Stour Primary School.

"The process of achieving the LPPA has been exceptionally rigorous and absolutely worthwhile. The work that we undertake with our families has been one of the "Outstanding" features of our school for some time and has consistently been recognised as such by OfSTED. I would unreservedly recommend this process to any school."
Sir Mark Grundy, Executive Principal, Shireland Collegiate Academy.
