Skills Scotland
Tuesday, November 25, 2014
The last Skills Scotland 2014 event finished on Thursday (13 November), having visited Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. The careers and skills events for young people, organised by Prospects Events, had more than 10,000 visitors, including more than 300 families for the Skills Scotland Glasgow open evening.
Prospects Events team has grown Skills Scotland, and it is now an annual feature in many school and college calendars. It gained good publicity and featured on Glasgow’s The Riverside Show, watched by nearly a million people in Glasgow every month.
Skills Scotland created highly interactive, informative, engaging spaces where young people were able to think about potential careers and the skills they have and need. The events gave young people the chance to meet employers and education and training providers.
More than 100 companies and organisations were involved in Skills Scotland, with many offering work-related activities, including designing a lighting circuit, saving a patient, shooting hoops, pedalling a smoothie maker, laying a patio, identifying bones in an archaeological dig, completing a giant cube puzzle, presenting the weather, getting a new hair style and icing a cupcake.
The Skills Scotland events were run in partnership with My World of Work from Skills Development Scotland, and Young Scot. These partnerships offer young people a chance to find out about the range of impartial advice available. Young people could earn Young Scot points, which can be redeemed for activities and rewards, by participating in the Get Skilled activities at the events.
